As a budding small business owner, or a hobbyist candle-maker, you may find yourself feeling a bit “in over your head”. Candle-making is a challenging craft, that can be thought of as more of an art-form than a job. As with any art-form, over time, you will find specific methods that work well for you, and set you apart from other artisans in the same field.

We take great pride in seeing someone ordering our jars and making a successful business out of them, or even just making a candle or craft that is loved by their friends and families. Today, we’ll be going over some of the most commonly asked candle-making questions, so you can hopefully create a successful product!

How to determine wax weight:

When making a candle, the wax weight is self-explanatory. Wax weight is simply how many ounces of wax can be held in a container. This is useful to know ahead of time, so you can measure out your wax for your candles and not waste any product, or come up short.

Determining wax weight for your container.

Wax weighs 80% of water’s

weight. Therefore, if you fill your glass jar with water up to the point that you want the wax to reach and measure it on a scale, you can then take that number and multiply it by 0.8 to get the wax weight that you’re looking for.

Water weight in container x 0.8 = Wax weight

Most candle jars and glass vessels are listed with how many fluid ounces of water they can hold. A “10 oz glass jar” on Jar Store refers to the fact that the vessel in question can hold up to 10 ounces of water. However, that 10 oz glass jar would actually hold 8 ounces of wax.

10 x 0.8 = 8 ounces of wax

How much fragrance oil should I use in my candles?

This can depend on a few factors: namely, how much wax you’re utilizing, what type of wax you’re using, and how strong you want your candle’s scent to be.

Candle wax will only take in a certain amount of fragrance oil, and this can be difficult to determine on your own.oil

As rules of thumb, try to use 0.5 to 1 ounce of wax per pound of paraffin or pillar waxes, or between 1 and 2 ounces of oil per pound of soy wax.

Candle-making is a science as much as it is an art-form, so don’t be afraid to experiment a bit! Make some test batches and give them away to your friends, this will help you nail down your process and determine the right amount of fragrance oil to utilize in your final products.

How should I store fragrance oils? How long do fragrance oils last?

Fragrance oils can last up to a year or even longer if properly stored. We recommend that you keep your fragrance oils at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. For best results, don’t expose your oils to extreme temperatures during storage, like in a freezer or close to a radiator or vent.

What is the difference between fragrance oils and essential oils?

An essential oil is defined as a natural oil that is normally obtained by distilling a plant or other source. Essential oils occur naturally in plants or fruits, and are extracted from those natural sources. Fragrance oils can also contain natural ingredients, but they typically contain synthetic materials as well. There’s nothing wrong with utilizing synthetic fragrance oils to achieve a certain scent in your candles, as properly sourced oils are compliant with the IFRA’s (International Fragrance Association) standards.

Are scented candles safe?

As long as nobody in your home has any allergies to fragrance oils or essential oils, then absolutely! Scented candles are not known to release any harmful chemicals into the air, and there are no known health hazards associated with scented candles. While it is always possible for sensitive individuals to have their allergies triggered by the oils in the candle, this is still just for a very small percentage of the population.

What are metal-core wicks used for?

Metal-core wicks are primarily used to keep the wick upright while the candle is burning. These cores are typically made of zinc or tin, both of which have been shown to be non-toxic and incredibly useful for candle-makers. If you’re making candles and having trouble keeping your wicks upright in use, consider a metal-core!
