Calling all pet lovers. National Spoil Your Dog Day is here! But we’re sure you already knew that.

And National Spoil Your Dog Day is about doing just that! Giving them one moment of free reign to sit on your couch if you admonish it every other day of the year, to bark at the little terrier a bit longer on your afternoon walk, or to have that coveted drink out of you know where instead of their dog bowl. Okay, maybe not the last one. Or not even the other two maybe depending on the kind of dog owner you are.

But an indulgence that all can comfortably observe (especially your dog!) as an option is a dog treat! How about strawberry banana smoothie biscuits for your best friend? We all love smoothies, so why not let them have a taste too!? Summer is still here. This is a time where your dog loves to be out with you on your morning runs or out by the pool with the entire family. How about treating them to some more sweet times with these.

What’s great for your pet is that this recipe is such a dog-friendly seasonal treat since bananas are typically a safe food for such animals. What’s great for you is that this recipe is also quick and easy. (However, a Note! These treats do however contain milk, so if your little-or big-guy or gal is lactose intolerant, please consider another safe dairy alternative to put in this recipe. Also, consider gluten-free flour substitutes if your pup is gluten sensitive.)

Now, Make It!

1/2 cup Strawberries, pureed
1 medium Banana, mashed
1/4 cup Milk
1 1/4 cup Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
2. In a large bowl mix all ingredients one at a time, kneading well after each addition.
3. Roll out dough on heavily  floured surface (the dough is very sticky) 1/4 inch thick.
4. Cut into shapes with the cutter of your choice.

5. Place cookies 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheet and poke with a fork to prevent air bubbles.
6. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes.

Then, Store It. (If You Have Any Left That Is. And No, Don’t Eat Your Little Pup’s Treats.)

Of course your little one shouldn’t finish all of those yummy bites in just one sitting, although we’re sure he or she would definitely do so if unsupervised. So how about a pretty cool DIY chalkboard dog treat jar specifically for your pup to designate it as off-limits to anyone else in the house? The chalkboard sides are a fun way to identify what’s in the jar, to write your pet’s name, or keep a list of your pet supply. The kids can join along too in showing appreciation to their buddy.

Supplies Needed for DIY Chalkboard Dog Treat Jar:

  • Glass Jar. We’d suggest a really roomy, stylish cookie or cracker jar with a special rectangular design to not only add some fun appeal, but also to conveniently place on your chalkboard and your painter’s tape. The cracker jar’s square panels are already marked by a very light ridge, which makes the work of taping it off much easier.
  • Chalkboard spray paint
  • Painter’s tape
  • Pet-themed stickers. These can be found anywhere: Walmart, Amazon, or a nearby craft store.
  • Chalk
  • Newspaper/Paper

Instructions for DIY Chalkboard Dog Treat Jar:

  1. Wash glass jar thoroughly and allow to air dry.
  2. Dip paper towel in vinegar and wipe all surfaces down.  Dry very carefully and make sure there is no lint left on glass surface.
  3. Using painter’s tape, cover entire jar except for the part you want painted. Tape all 4 sides.
  4. Now, time for the spray painting! We’d suggest going outside for ventilation. Lay the taped jar on newspaper, spray 1 coat very lightly to create a “tack” coat.  Allow to dry 20 minutes then apply another slightly heavier coat. Allow to dry again then apply a final coat.
  5. Let your jar dry at least 1 to 2 hours, remove painter’s tape.
  6. Prep your chalkboard areas by rubbing chalk up and down, covering every bit of painted surface.  Rub chalk into paint with a soft cloth. Erase all chalk off board. Your chalkboard is now primed and ready to use!
  7. Decorate with pet-themed stickers.

Just like that, you’re all set. Now get to treating your dog to those dog-friendly strawberry banana smoothie biscuits in that DIY dog treat jar!
